Together with the participants, we will take a critical look at how the colonial period shaped the city as well as the former colonies and the effects that are still impacting oru present. How are Flensburg’s trade and maritime connections linked to the exploitation and oppression on the formerly Danish-colonized Caribbean islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John?
The tour takes us through four stops along traces of colonial history that are still present. We will deal with the change in consumption through so-called colonial goods and racism in advertising, as well as its consequences. Other aspects are forms of remembrance like monuments and the question about the relation of sugar and bricks to all this and some more.
The city tours start in front of the Flensburger Schifffahrtsmuseum (Schiffbrücke 39) and will take about two hours. Participation is free of charge; the initiative is happy to receive donations, which will be passed on to decolonial working projects.
